Soldier For Self

Mother wasn’t an alcoholic,
Father wanted his definition of a man,
I wasn’t birthed a son of logic,
But Father couldn’t understand,
Childhood was a war with myself,
And I didn’t need a hero to save me then,
All those hours spent hating everybody else,
Only made me who I am,

I’m a solider for self,
You can’t fault me for being cold,
I don’t need your help,
I don’t need someone to hold,
I don’t need someone to keep me warm,
Somebody to shield me from harm,
I don’t need your help,
I’m a solider for self,

Peers jeered and everything fell apart,
But I’ve stitched myself together for now,
I don’t believe in love, it only breaks my heart,
Bullets shot from tongues, I drown out the sound,
Every fight has me fighting it out alone,
You always stood on the sidelines,
Years of walking aimlessly without a home,
Leaves no time or space for crying,
I’m a solider for self,
You can’t fault me for being cold,
I don’t need your help,
I don’t need someone to hold,
I don’t need someone to keep me warm,
Somebody to shield me from harm,
I don’t need your help,
I’m a solider for self,

Marching to my own drumbeat,
The battle horns sounded years and years ago,
And I’m still not admitting defeat,
I’m my own brigade, and I’m toughing it out alone,

They’re clicking pistols and cocking guns,
And I’m still the only one,

I’m a solider for self,
You can’t fault me for being cold,
I don’t need your help,
I don’t need someone to hold,
I don’t need someone to keep me warm,
Somebody to shield me from harm,
I don’t need your help,
I’m a solider for self,
