Hazim Haemoglobin’s 150 Favorite Songs Everrrr!
Part Two [#101-#125)

February 19, 2011
top 150
There’s something really awesome about listing things. It could be your Christmas wish list. It could be arranging your favorite Glee characters in order (my favorite would be Santana). Whatever the list is, listing is fun. I was trying to wring my brain out for ideas for the playlist. I thought of this-150 of my favorite songs of all time. They either mean something to me, inspire me, make me dance, cry, laugh and sing along. They evoke feelings which lull me into returning to the same song when I’m feeling that emotion. They’re also songs I put on repeat quite often. Whether you agree or not, this is my list and I’m not some renowned music critic. If you haven’t heard some of these songs, I highly recommend you check them out. I encourage you to purchase them legally of course but nowadays, that’s like telling a 2 year old not to crap in his/her diapers.

santana#125: Juelz Santana-There It Go (The Whistle Song)
Everybody’s got a song that makes them feel like the hottest thing at the club. I avoid all things T Pain related because Wikipedia page once informed he that he’s the least talented ‘musician’ out there and that he eats fetuses for breakfast. So, it’s maybe a safe pick to romp along to Juelz Santana one and only hit-but a sexy one nevertheless.

Alala#124: Cansei de Ser Sexy-Alala
This is the dumbest song on this list. This is als0 one of the fun-nest.

The Cure#123: The Cure-Lullaby
Sure, tell me your favorite Cure song even if it’s not ‘Lullaby’ but how many of their songs survived a Faithless reinterpretation? I wouldn’t date Robert Smith but I’d make him some goulash and maybe knit him a hat to hide that tangled mess of hair. Then he’d finally get laid and possibly record the best Cure song ever. Until ‘Spiderman comes’, there’s always ‘Lullaby’.

Vampire Weekend#122: Vampire Weekend-Giving Up The Gun
Indie pop finding mainstream success is nothing new, and like a lot of people who were wary of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs hitting the top 10 only to flail about aimlessly, I turned my head away when Vampire Weekend first started blasting through the airwaves. A Jonas brother being involved didn’t help either. But when you realize you need a song to strike up some cool points with your date, there is no better catchier song than this.

Ane Brun#121: Ane Brun feat. Ron Sexsmith-Song No. 6
If only Jewel wasn’t so pompous, she might reach the right balance between being poetic and making music that people can actually listen to without cringing. My friend suggested this after I was disappointed with Jewel’s album, This Way, and this provided an excellent alternative.

Frightened Rabbit#120: Frightened Rabbit-Modern Leper
“Well, I’ve crippled your heart…and I can’t work out why” Does the lead singer have any self confidence at all? Judging from this song, you might think he’s using himself as a punching bag with all the air of despair going on, but I love this so much because there’s one point, or many points, in my life actually, when I feel his lyrics (which are pretty open to interpretation) and when the song starts kicking into full swing, I kinda tear up a bit.

Telekinesis#119: Telekinesis-Coast Of Carolina
I refuse to acknowledge the exclamation mark Michael Benjamin Lerner attached to his one man band’s name when he first started out. This song just swells me up with so many emotions though, especially the urge to flail my arms and start moving around until my friends yell at me to stop it. This song is that great.

Shy Child#118: Shy Child-Drop The Phone
When I was asked to choreograph my own introduction as a prom night emcee, I knew exactly which song fit my rambunctious personality. This song just bustles with SO MUCH FREAKING ENERGY. It doesn’t let you breathe right up to the very end. I was gasping my breath during the first 5 seconds of dancing to this.

Hot Chip#117: Hot Chip-Ready For The Floor
The ‘homage’ to Heath ledger’s The Joker wasn’t well received by me, so I usually shut my eyes and pretend the music video doesn’t exist, which is effective enough to make my brain forget and my feet remember. Dance white boy! Dance!

Hercules#116: Hercules and Love Affair-Blind
Antony Hegarty (of Antony & The Johnsons) has an OMG voice. Whatever he sings, I’ll always be captivated. He could be singing the phone book or my X-Men ticket stubs and I’d be swaying along and loving it. ‘Blind’ is pretty bizarre for a dance track in my opinion and I don’t understand when critics classify it as such. I listen to it whenever I want to shake some stress of and fuel my urge to go all drag on the city.

Big Pink#115: The Big Pink-Dominos
When a bizarre oddity like Nicki Minaj tries to sample your track but fails to add anything new to it, you know you’ve got a real gem. All of their other songs are fine, but ‘Dominos’ is the massive trademark track people like me would heckling for at concerts for years and years.

Lily Allen#114: Lily Allen-The Fear
I really think it’s pompous of her to just ‘quit music’. She was the original princess of snide and mistress of snide and once she became queen, she just hung up her mic. Sure, there’s always Kate Nash and Little Boots and Florence and Charlotte Sometimes and…well, I’ll still miss her despite all those other clones out there. She’s really the only one of them who could win in a fist fight.

Junior Senior#113: Junior Senior-Move Your Feet
A gay guy and a straight guy pumping out filthy gorgeous dance music like the Scissor Sisters wish they could? WIN. Do you think that maybe by now, the gay guy’s gotten into the straight guy’s pants? If they did hook up, it must have been to this song.

Max Richter#112: Max Richter-Iconography
Wanna what kind of music I listen to when I write? Instrumentals mostly. One of the best modern composers out there is Max Richter. Every listen reveals a layer, and even if you’re not attentive enough you can always float around in limbo, your own little world, with this track on repeat. It’ll still sound like one giant song no matter how many repeat plays it gets. I love Max Richter. He’s really got skills. He should soundtrack the next Christopher Nolan movie after The Dark Knight Rises.

Love Is All#111: Love Is All-Make Out Fall Out Make Up
Nine That Same Song is a masterclass album and there’s no way you could listen to it without bringing up this song in a review. “I think I’ll spend the whole day in bed…”bristles with energy and defiance, this thing defines the relationship cycle in just 3 minutes.

Camille#109: Camille-Vous
Camille looks like a man, but she’s one of the most feminine sounding singers out there. This chirpy infectious piece of pop makes you almost disregard Nouvella Vague. It’s that awesome. I played it for my French teacher and even he was puzzled as to what the lyrics mean. I know Tony Blair is in it. Good enough!

Air France#108: Air France-Collapsing At Your Doorstep
The airline crash occurred a year after this song was released. That was just coincidence, but a sad one nevertheless. Their name frustrates users who have typed in Air France only to be met with what else, the airline, and occasionally the crash. But search deep enough for this gem which I interpret as a hopeful love song, the way it swells 1.5 minutes in. It’s totally worth it.

JV#107: John Vanderslice-Exodus Damage
You could die a thousand deaths if you listened to this song a thousand times and a thousand and one resurrections if you listened to it a thousand and one times. “I’ll see you next fall!” he calls out, dropping Dance Dance Revolution in the process of ‘losing his confidence’. Mr. Vanderslice is very inconsistent for me but when he gets it right, he’s the best out there at making quirky pop that’d make Mika bleed out of his penis.

Katy Rose#106: Katy Rose-Lemon
It would be a pretty easy to call to just dump one of the faster Katy Rose songs on, but this ballad really showcases the level of depth in her lyrics, even at that teenage phase. Her father may be semi-famous and she may be semi-one hit wonder right now, flailing about to release a new album, but if you want teen pop done justice, look no further than cross eyed Katy.

Yo La Tango#105: Yo la Tango-Beanbag Chair
WHAT? You need a soundtrack to a happy 90s childhood? Let me put this on repeat. It sounds like a carnival game in your backyard. It sounds like hopscotch skipping and selling lemonade out in front of your house. Listen and grow down.

Art Brut#104: Art Brut-Formed A Band
LOOK AT US! WE FORMED A BAND! Sporting one of the worst singing voices I’ve heard on record to date, the band follow up The Libertines’ implosion with a song about forming a band. Nifty huh? Nothing they did after this really stuck, except maybe that ‘Emily Kane’ song. But since then, there has been no other song about forming a band. Thank god.

Travis#103: Travis-Driftwood
Fran Healy might be the Hindu God of Ambience and Sexiness. Meshing pop sensibilities, pristine vocals, melancholy lyrics, and all that atmosphere makes for a Top 40 hit that deserves its hit status. Travis is one of my favorite bands mainly because Fran Healy has never named his baby Apple, never bonked up an Academy Award winning actress, and never ‘inspired’ a bunch of crackheads to pick up a guitar and think they can sing ‘Yellow’ too. Here’s to Fran Healy forever!

Kelly Clarkson#102: Kelly Clarkson-Since U Been Gone
How many have not heard this song already? My guess is zero. This was all over the place, and if any of Kelly’s hits deserved to hit number one, it’d be any song off the almost flawless Breakaway. Despite ‘Breakaway’ as the lead single, Miss American idol never really broke free from Idol until this song was released. She wasn’t breaking up with a boy as much as she was breaking up with the Idol machine. Karen O, eat your heart out.

LCD Soundsystem#101: LCD Soundsystem-I Can Change
Thanks to Colbert, a bunch of new ears will be peeling for LCD Soundsystem and boys and girls will be pining for James Murphy, who has found himself as a musical sex object. “Daft Punk Is Playing At My House’ is overrated. The falsetto, the throbbing Super Mario beat, and the repetition of ‘never change, never change, never change’ is seriously some sexy stuff. Now, I want to have sex with him too.

Hazim Haemoglobin’s 150 Favorite Songs Everrrr!
Part One [#126-#150)

February 15, 2011

There’s something really awesome about listing things. It could be your Christmas wish list. It could be arranging your favorite Glee characters in order (my favorite would be Santana). Whatever the list is, listing is fun. I was trying to wring my brain out for ideas for the playlist. I thought of this-150 of my favorite songs of all time. If you haven’t heard some of these songs, I highly recommend you check them out. I encourage you to purchase them legally of course but nowadays, that’s like telling a 2 year old not to crap in his/her diapers.

Fiona Apple#150: Fiona Apple-Criminal
Even when you shut your eyes to the scandalous seedy provocative video, this song is an audio storm, from the swaying piano to Fiona’s confident hair raising vocals, it marks her entrance into the mainstream, collecting a Grammy along the way. Maybe this song defines my 1996 well. It’s the year I peeked at my first Playboy magazine.

Belle & Sebastian#149: Belle And Sebastian-I’m A Cuckoo
Belle and Sebastian have been making music for bookish nerds everywhere for a while now. “I had a dream..and you were wearing funny shoes..” is a cutesy way to open up a song. This was released in this new millennium, but the song is nostalgically 90s, in the most charming way.

Eminem#148: Eminem feat. Dido-Stan
Not being a big fan, other than appreciating “The Real Slim Shady”, I wasn’t sure I’d be getting on the Eminem train. Changed when I heard this. Intense. Powerful. Creative. Eminem is a force with his rapping. A force with his lyrics. And that Dido sample solidified my status as a Dido stan myself and an Eminem convert, at the very least. Plus, putting him on this list lets me post this kinky picture of Em.

Fujiaya#147: Fujiya & Miyagi-Knickerbocker
I found out about knickerbockers from The Secret of Platform 13 (still one of my favorite books), and I’ve only been lucky enough to taste it once. This song encapsulates that moment perfectly. A theme song to a very specific moment. And name dropping Lena Zavaroni just makes the vanillas and strawberries taste that much sweeter in my mind.

No Joy#146: No Joy-Ghost Blonde
Did you know No Joy are made of two girls prettier than The Veronicas? I never knew! Until I Googled them because when a friend sent me the songs, I assumed it was a band in the fashion of Bat For Lashes or something. This guitar strumming by the beach sing-a long-with-some-beach-blonds-and-have-a-good-time-song gets me pretty high.

Goldfrapp#145: Goldfrapp-U Never Know
Supernature was a brilliant album gushing with synths and ambience for the dance floor romantic. From the high pitch note that starts off the song to the breathy delivery throughout the rest, I think this is Alison Goldgrapp’s most seductive performance on a track. Kylie must have been begging for this back then.

Nomo#144: Nomo-Brain Wave
Are you a geek trying to find some sort proof that you can make it in music if you can’t sing and all you know how to do is tweak with knobs? Listen no further than this completely ridiculous, yet somehow catchy, screwed and chopped “Brain Wave” which, if there ever was a song that did sound like a brain wave, this would be it.

Little Jackie#143: Little Jackie-The World Should Revolve Around Me
Imani Coppola’s sidekick in Little Jackie is as important as Meg White in The White Stripes. He exists to make her look cool. She’s the real boss here, and if you’re ever feeling down and you need a good spirit lifting braggart of a song, this should be blasted from your balcony as you yell out the track title. I’ve done it! Makes you feel invincible!

Jordin Sparks#141: Jordin Sparks with Chris Brown-No Air
Aside from Kelly Clarkson, I really didn’t think any American Idol alumni could pop out a credible gem that lasts even past its radio airplay prime. In gasps Jordin Sparks trading verses of teenage love and devotion with the pre-Rihanna face-smashing Chris Brown. The way it builds and builds and swoops and cascades and then ends the way it started-out of breath. Took my breath away. Pun fully intact! Get your oxygen tanks ready!

Patrick Wolf#140: Patrick Wolf-Get Lost
OMG. OMG. OMG. I want to place this song higher..but there are like, two more Patrick Wolf songs coming, so…I love him so much. He’s unique. I’d date him. He’s modeled for Burberry and this song reminds me of the times I used to bike with my friends through the back woods’ trails and well…get lost. This was my Valentines dedication song 3 years ago and it still makes sense to dedicate it to my lover today. If only my Valentine was Patrick Wolf, huh?

Suede#139: Suede-Fashion
Before Scissor Sisters and after Elastica, there was Suede and there was the uber sexy Brett Anderson, who sings with so much conviction in his drag, it works in mysterious ways. Music for runways from Paris to Milan, this song will never ever ever go out of fashion for me. It just makes you feel all sexy when you sing it to yourself in the mirror…not saying I do it…yeah. Haha

ZZ Top#138: ZZ Top-La Grange
Wait…ZZ Top started out as a joke. My friend snuck it into my playlist thinking I’d hate it, cringe, and delete and he’d get a chuckle out of it. I was going to. I like the swagger and though you get the sense these guys think they’re coming on strong, I’m still buying into the HAW HAW HAWS!!! Don’t associate this Wild Hogs and charcoal on grills please. And the pic I posted looks like they’re humping each other! Yay!

Gwen Stefani#137: Gwen Stefani-What You Waiting For?
It seems that in between Madonna’s peak and the emergence of Lady Gaga, people have slightly forgotten about the ultimate Madonna-be, miss ska punk pop herself, Gwen Stefani. Her transition from No Doubt frontwoman to full fledged solo artist was an obvious call and a track like this proved to my ears that there’s more beyond the Blond Ambition!

Young Rival#136: Young Rival-Your Island
I actually don’t know much about this artist. There are so many Beach Boys knock offs, it’s hard to keep track and keep count. But this is definitely one of the best attempts at channeling them. It’s such a feel good song and the way the lead sings ‘water all around me’ and ‘nobody has found me’ is addictive. What should be a dreary situation is one soaked in sun.

Xui Xui#135: Xiu Xiu-Boy Soprano
The music video for this song definitely pushes this here on the list. The video game sequence is just so goddamn creative and the beat zings and zings through your ears like a fly-but much less annoying. And the reason I’d even consider it to be even a little bit annoying is the lead’s voice. Other than that, this is pop perfection!

Max Tundra#134: Max Tundra-Will Get Fooled Again
If Mika was male and Gaga was feminine, there would be Max Tundra and he’d set the charts on fire with this. If the world was fair, of course. The melody he’s trying to chew on isn’t as catchy as the bleeps and bloops hopping along in the background though. The video is a must watch for the cute yet bizarre visuals of seeing a pop star portrayed as a pimple. Eww and ahhhh.

Nelly Furtado#133: Nelly Furtado feat. Timbaland-Promiscuous
Didn’t anybody tell her that her second album was a beautiful progression into something mature and potentially groundbreaking? I guess Folklore’s boho bongos didn’t hold her interest long enough or Timbaland just happened to ride his chart topping horse and sweep her off into the land of low necklines and Justin Timberlake cameos…either way, hookers have an anthem now.

#131: Gang Of Four-At Home He’s A Tourist

Yeasayer

#130: Yeasayer-Madder Red
Kristen Bell and my love for Veronica Mars makes me love the video which made me love this song which made me love Yeasayer despite the fact that I think making Kristen Bell kiss that ugly horrific sack of flesh dog thingy in the music video is just so utterly wrong I don’t know what else to say except it evokes Bell’s best acting performance ever. And the song is really nice.

U2#129: U2-Elevation
Tomb Raider was an iffy movie, but I’m just so grateful it pushed U2 to a new high with this very energetic fist pumping anthem. Bono can be such a floozy sometimes, but here, he’s a real rockstar. This song is on here because it’s a karaoke staple of mine. I just loooove wailing along to the ‘woooHOOS!!!’

Oneida#128: Oneida-Up With People
If I were an aspiring musician, a guitarist or something, I’d probably look to the likes of Battles or Oneida for modern technical inspiration. Noise rock goes all psychedelic one minute in then morphs into echoes of stoned vocals bouncing off rowdy percussion. This isn’t for everyone and I only listen to this when I just don’t want to think. Blank? Play Oneida.

Alicia Keys#127: Alicia Keys-Fallin
Back when Alicia Keys had braids, played piano, wore a ridiculously stylish huge fedora hat thing, people knew she’d bag a bunch of Grammy trophies. They didn’t think she’d stick around though because Lauryn Hill’s footprints were still fresh back then. They were wrong motherfuckers! Alicia is a beast at making everything sound poignant. But as is with most artists, nothing tops her debut. The voice is already legendary in my mind.

Feist#126: Feist-1234
Some ‘underground’ boogerheads ditch and squirm when the artist they’ve been following beneath the mainstream, for years suddenly gets their big break and an Ipod commercial. Come on! Feist totally deserves all the Grammy love she got and her song reaching inside the top 10 on Billboard. This song is meant to be a breakout hit from the fragility in her voice at the beginning to the celebratory mood in conveys in the end, I clapped along and sang along and crossed my fingers it’d hit it big. I used to play “Mushaboom” alone in my room all the time, but Feist delivered a song the whole world could hold hands and belt out-1234. Get Feist-y!
